Cutting his teeth on songs by The Talleys, Rex Nelon Singers, The Hemphills, The Greenes, The Florida Boys and Gold City as he listened to Country Chapel on Athens, Georgia's WNGC 95.5 FM radio in the 1980s as a kid, Greg Freeman came to enjoy and appreciate other styles and genres of both Christian/gospel and secular music. His eclectic taste in music is reflected both in his recorded music output and songwriting.
He wrote his first song as an adolescent. While the song will never wind up on a commercial recording project, it is a testament to the influence songwriters such as Sandy Knight, Joel Hemphill, Kirk Talley, Phil Cross and others had on him during those formative years.
In the early 2000s, Greg had a few songs signed to single-song publishing agreements with a major company in Nashville but failed to initially find the support and encouragement he needed, and nearly gave up on his musical aspirations.
A friendship with Don Butler, a charter member, past executive director and former president of the Gospel Music Association and founding member of the innovative gospel trio, The Sons of Song, proved impactful, as Greg received the encouragement, prayer support and mentorship for which he had longed. A friendship and songwriting partnership thereafter began with Grammy-nominated and Dove Award-winning artist Babbie Mason, and their songs have been recorded/performed by numerous artists, including the Collingsworth Family, 11th Hour, The Chitans and, of course, Mason and Freeman themselves. Greg has been fortunate enough to become friends with many of the artists and songwriters who have influenced him along the way.
Greg has developed his own artistic identity, finding his voice as a songwriter and using his love of music, particularly gospel music, to uplift, encourage and challenge others who, like Greg, might have signed on early in life for a relationship with Jesus Christ or might have gotten to know Him later in their lives or perhaps don't even know Him at all. Whether leading worship, sharing his latest song or telling a story, Greg enjoys the interaction with an audience and is humbled by the awesome opportunity God has afforded him.
Thanks to the internet and digital platforms, Greg has listeners and fans from all around the world. Greg is grateful for each and every one, but most of all he is grateful to God from whom all blessings flow! If you have been blessed by a Greg Freeman song, please share it with your friends and social media followers. More importantly, give thanks to the Lord for salvation, His sustaining grace and the wonderful gift of music through which He blesses us and allows us to give praise back to Him.
